Tim Tingle is a storyteller, author, and Oklahoma Choctaw. He begins the story of young Isaac and the Trail of Tears with the haunting opening line "Maybe you have never read a book written by a ghost before." What follows is the tragic tale of the removal of the tribe from their ancestral lands and relocation to Oklahoma. The story is told by Isaac, a shape-shifting jaguar boy, a courageous teen girl and an engaging five-year-old ghost.
How I Became a Ghost won the American Indian Youth Literature Award in 2014 and was named a Notable Social Studies Trade Book in that same year. Mr. Tingle lives just up the road from San Antonio in Canyon Lake, TX.
