San Antonio Public Library Celebrates Vaisakhi Festival to Mark the Sikh New Year

Learn more about this historical and religious festival from the Gurdwara Sikh Center of San Antonio

The San Antonio Public Library is a welcoming community gathering place that provides opportunities for people to meet, exchange ideas, and participate in the life of their community. Between April 14 and April 29, the Library will host three celebrations of the Vaisakhi Festival, a historical and religious festival that marks the Sikh New Year. Select branch libraries will celebrate the occasion with traditional Bhangra dance performances and the screening of a documentary film about Vaisakhi , provided by Gurdwara Sikh Center of San Antonio.

Meet the Author: Dr. David Spener at Central Library

Trinity Professor to discuss historical significance of “We Shall Not Be Moved” slave spiritual in honor of Black History Month

Dr. David Spener of Trinity University will tell the story of how the song “We Shall Not Be Moved” began as a slave spiritual in the early nineteenth century and later became an anthem for the labor and African American civil rights movements in the United States.

San Antonio Public Library Winds and Words of War WWI Poster Exhibit to Leave for Two- Year Tour of Europe

The Bexar County Commissioners Court commitment to the history of this community and its military legacy is demonstrated by its sponsorship for the European tour

The San Antonio Public Library and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation are excited to announce that Winds and Words of War, a library-owned vintage collection of WWI propaganda prints and posters, will be leaving this month on a two-year tour of Europe. The exhibit will be displayed at Museum The Kennedys in Berlin, Germany; Justus-Liebig-Haus in Darmstadt, Germany; Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, United Kingdom; The Franco-American Museum in Cháteau de Biérancourt, France; and Musée de la Grande Guerre in Pays de Meaux, France. 

Downtown Construction at the Central Library

Central Library patrons should be advised that construction is currently in effect for surrounding streets to include, San Pedro Avenue, N. Main Avenue and Navarro Street.

Street improvements as part of the San Pedro/N. Main/ Navarro Roundabout construction project are scheduled for completion Fall of this year, 2017. This project is led by the City of San Antonio Transportation and Capital Improvements (TCI) Department.
