“I am excited to have chosen ‘The Fire This Time’ by National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward,” said Mayor Taylor. “I understand the book is a powerful collection of essays and poems about race in the United States and it’s so timely. I can’t wait to read it and hear from San Antonians about their thoughts on the book.”
“The Fire This Time” is divided into three distinct sections:
- The first sheds light on the somber corners of our history;
- The second grapples with our current times; and
- The third inspires readers to envision a brighter future.
During the next few months, families are encouraged to check out a copy of “The Fire This Time” at any of the San Antonio Library’s 28 locations or digitally at mysapl.org. They are also invited to participate in discussions and events that focus on the themes of the book at their local branch library.
