San Antonio Public Library Honors Latinos and Latinas in Public Service to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez among others will be honored at events and programs featured September 15 – October 15 across the Library system

The San Antonio Public Library will celebrate Latinos and Latinos in public service this year as it honors the diversity and rich cultural heritage of the Alamo City during Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 – October 15.

90,126 volumes featuring a large fiction collection and a strong art book collection. There is a broad selection of adult and juvenile audiobooks. Cody also has an extensive collection of adult and juvenile videos including classic movies, documentaries, and educational videos, as well as, popular entertainment videos. Music CDs and DVDs have been added to the collection.

Only Children's magazines circulated.


Located in City Council District 8. Located in U.S. Congressional District 21, State Senate District 26, State House District 123, Commissioners Court Precinct 3, Justice of the Peace 3, and Constable 3. 

Serves schools in the Northside School District and Northeast School District, Alamo Community College District 7 and School Board of Education 5. 

It is the branch closest to the Medical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio.


The Edmund Cody Branch Library was the 14th branch of the San Antonio Public Library and opened April 29, 1984 on land donated by the Northside School District. The branch was named in honor of Mr. Edmund Cody who served as the Superintendent of the Northside School District for seventeen years and was instrumental in promoting the community library. Mr. Cody is a native of South Carolina and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Furman University in South Carolina with a masters degree in educational administration from Trinity University. 

Land for the building donated by Northside Independent School District. 

Friends of Cody Branch Library funded purchase of children's furniture and start-up collection of compact disks. 

Renovation of Cody Branch, under 1989 bond election funding, began in May of 1998 and the branch was re-opened on August 23, 1999. Additional land for renovation was donated again by the Northside School District. The branch was expanded over 3,000 square feet with a new meeting room and study room added and general renovation of the branch with a new roof and expanded HVAC system.
